DARK SHADOWS

Dark Shadows, (Re-make)

Born in 1963, I was not an avid follower of the late 1960’s – early 70’s TV series Dark Shadows with Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, but knew of it well.  Needless to say I was still most interested to see Tim Burton’s movie rendition of this classic ABC daytime Serial.

Finally having had the opportunity to see Dark Shadows, I was pleasantly entertained and very much enjoyed this film.  I was slightly amused with an opening scene, where the young woman sitting in a train on the way to the Collins Mansion to apply for the governess position, scanned her immediate surroundings in the compartment she was travelling in and noticed a poster with the words “Ski VICTORIA, B.C.”.  Hence the lead character’s name “Victoria Winters”.

I was intrigued by the choice and use of the city’s name and province “Victoria, B.C.” (my home town).  It is not a city that is highly recognized and known by many.

Normally I would not make a point about acknowledgments in films, but because there was one small detail the writers failed to realize……there is no skiing in ‘Victoria’, BC.  One can ski on the island, yes, but it would be on the slopes of Mt. Washington located 4 hours north of Victoria.  Victoria is not a well known city, but a city, where many who have graced its boardwalks and streets, have been blown away by its beauty and charm , i.e. JK Rowling.

I have indulged in the character Barnabas Collins for Halloween purposes only.

Steampunk….Pirate?

Bringing some Piracy to STEAMPUNK

The following explanation is through internet research, (ie Wikipedia etc.)

Steampunk is a genre which came to existence during the 1980s and early 1990s incorporating elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction.  It involves a setting where steam power is widely used (the Steam-) ~ whether in an alternate history such as the Victorian era, or in a “Wild West” era, or in a post-apocalyptic time (Diesel Punk) that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy ~ along with some rebellious aspects against some of it (the punk).

In general, steampunk includes any recent science fiction that takes place in a recognizable historical period (sometimes an alternate history version) where the Industrial Revolution has already begun, but electricity was not yet widespread. It places an emphasis on steam or spring-propelled gadgets. The most common historical steampunk settings are the Victorian and Edwardian eras.  A recognizable steampunk movie (Victorian era – Britain) ~ Sherlock Holmes.

Steampunk fashion has no set guidelines, but tends to synthesize modern styles influenced by the Victorian era. This may include gowns, corsets, petticoats and bustles; suits with vests, coats, top hats, and spats; or military-inspired garments. Steampunk-influenced outfits are usually accented with several technological and period accessories: timepieces, parasols, flying/driving goggles, and ray guns. Modern accessories like cell phones or music players can be found in steampunk outfits, after being modified to give them the appearance of Victorian-made objects. Aspects of steampunk fashion have been anticipated by mainstream high fashion, the Lolita fashion and aristocrat styles, neo-Victorianisms, and the romantic goth subculture.

The Greater Victoria Film Commission (GVFC) now known as the Vancouver Island South Film & Media Commission was established as a non profit organization in 1996 with the objective to promote the Southern Vancouver Island as an international filming destination.  As a non-profit the Vancouver Island South Film & Media Commission has focused on developing the infrastructure required to provide necessary services and talent to the international film and television industry.  As part of their efforts to increase film productions in the region they provide free services to production companies such as location scouting, location surveys, script breakdowns, digital location library, and assistance with film and work permits.

Vancouver Island has a lot to offer international film makers, ‘whether they’re looking for varied scenery, a castle or two, or heritage buildings (the exterior of Market Square was readily transformed into a Paris bistro for the horrifying climax to Final Destination 2)’.

Nonus Porta

Period Fine Binder Creates Nonus Porta

My portrayal of Johnny Depp's character "Dean Corso" from the film "The NINTH GATE"

A few months ago I was asked if I would consider being a part of a mini film commercial/video for a book binding shop, Period Fine Bindings. Immediately jumping on board and accepted without thinking through the implications of the character choice the owners of the shop had in mind for me to depict. Because I rely heavily on wigs, it wasn’t until after the fact that it was brought to my attention that the character, “Dean Corso” played by Johnny Depp in Roman Polanski’s 1999 film The Ninth Gate, had short hair with greying at the temples. Initially a little dismayed with a wave of reluctance showering my judgement, I pressed on.  As my thoughts prossesed the project, I relished the challenge.

'The Nine Gates': replica of the book shown in the 1999 film "The NINTH GATE"

Conservation, Restoration and Period Bookbinder, Paul Tronson, who has worked several years for the Queen of England, is a brilliant and talented craftsman at his trade. Amongst his possessions of some of the most beautifully handcrafted pieces of History, Paul has delicately recreated the imaginary book The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows by Aristide Torchia.

In the film The Ninth Gate, Dean Corso, (Johnny Depp), a rare-book dealer, was hired by a wealthy book collector Boris Balkan, (Frank Langella) to validate a seventeenth-century copy of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows.  Inspired by this film based on the novel El Club Dumas, written by Arturo Perez-Reverte, Paul Tronson saw the parallel’s between the beautiful historic (prop) books in the film and the reality of his own period editions and hand crafted books including his latest (fictional) piece of work ‘Nonus Porta ~ The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows’.

On set, final scene

With a transformation challenge on my hands, it was a project I wanted to pursue. Having had the luxury of experiencing first hand creations with leathers, dyes, inlays and receiving a tour of beautifully constructed Historic first editions, such as the book of King James (bible), I was left astouned, overwhelmed and enriched.

‘HUGO’ the movie…

A little Johnny, a little Jack, a little…… Steampunk?

For those who are very much into ‘Steampunk’, “Hugo” is a must see film. It is a co-production of Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Graham Kings, GK Films. Produced by Johnny Depp, Graham King and Timothy Headington, directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie is based on Brian Selznick’s novel ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabaret’. “Hugo” is a fantasy adventure that takes place in a Paris railway station in the early 1930s. Hugo Cabret is a young boy whose father, a master clockmaker, and mother has died, leaving him with his alcoholic uncle, who is a watchmaker responsible for maintaining the clocks in the railway station. Hugo’s adventure begins when he meets a young girl, godchild of the legendary film maker and illusionist Georges Méliès, who holds the ‘key’ to the ‘mechanical man’ Hugo’s father left behind upon his death.  A very heart felt and moving film. It honours old historical movies by Georges Méliès, who is sometimes referred as the First ‘Cinemagician’.

Steampunk is a present fascination of mine… the concept, fashion, gadgets… all clearly intriguing with overwhelming ideas.  It is yet another chapter in my world of ‘dress-up’.

UPDATE:  HUGO has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards on February 26, 2012.

Prawn Fest 2011

A little shameless self promotion…

I will never get used to those individuals, whom I have never met before, compliment my tribute towards the few Johnny Depp characters I have chosen to pursue.  As a female, I know I am up against some incredible stiff male competition who have the added bonus of being,.. well,… a man.  It always remains a surprise, and yet a reward, to receive praise and high regard towards the ‘visual’ I have created for the public’s enjoyment.

Not too long ago, a family member told me that at the end of a CBC radio broadcast interview, covering the 2011 Prawn Fest on BC’s Vancouver Island, the interviewer’s final question was, “… and what was the highlight of this event?” (Gentleman being interviewed): “Oh the hightlight? The hightlight was definitely this amazing Jack Sparrow look-alike that graced and entertained the crowds…..just uncanny….”.

POTC Premiere On Stranger Tides at Silver City Theatre:

‘I think you make the most unbelievable Jack look-alike I have ever seen. I first saw you in 2009 at the buccaneer days, then again just a few weekends ago at the opening sold out show of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at Silver City. I was standing in line has you walked up the hall way and no joke the whole line went crazy everyone left to just get a pic with you or even talk to you then came back and couldn’t stop talking about how you showed up the whole movie and was talking about how much you look like him. It’s so amazing, the reaction you can make on so many people even though a lot of people know your not the real one, they still want a pic to and to talk to you to say what your doing is awesome. Hope to see u soon in action:) a big fan’.

Thank you so much Mandy.  Hope to see you again soon as well 🙂

A most amazing wedding I attended as the Mad Hatter:

‘Now, you were simply….fantastic!!! From the moment I spoke to you, to your final departure that evening, you were not only professional but extremely easy to work with, interacted with all the guests, and everybody loved you. I have some great pics of you that evening for you and your site if you wish. You definitely were a huge hit. Thank you so much, The Farquharsons’

POTC On Stranger Tides,….

“Just For Fun” Observation

When I took part of the viewing of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, not only did I thoroughly enjoy this installment, but pleasantly “stunned” to see Penelope Cruz play a female Jack.  This undoubtedly took some pressure off certain aspects of the Jack character being played by women, ,….. one in particular, the constant adjustments and struggle to ‘lowering’ the voice.  Although,… is it now expected of me to obtain a Spanish accent “I wonda”?  Ahhh, I believe I will leave that task to my daughter, who now cosplays Angelica Teach.

During the viewing, there were a few familiar scenes,… pictures rather.  One in particular where Jason S. Photography, snapped a similar shot of me at a Classic Boat Festival a year prior to the release of the movie.  (See below).

Johnny Depp Dresses as a Woman….

It has been brought to my attention, for those few who are slightly concerned that I may be ‘poking fun’ at Johnny Depp’s feminine facial features by impersonating him being a woman. You could not be farther from the truth.  As a true man, Johnny Depp’s ‘gentle features’ enhances his boyishness which in part is one of the reasons why women of all ages ‘swoon’ over him.

In the entertainment industry, a woman dressing as a man, or a man dressing as a woman, is another ‘character’ portrayal of that individual’s persona of the opposite gender which has been acutely studied.  If you, as an actor were given the role of, let’s say, “pirate”… not only would you study the history of pirates to get a firm background and knowledge of their past existence, but one would also bring in his/her interpretation on the ‘visual’ of that character that becomes a part of his/her performance, (to provide believability) for the audience’s enjoyment.  In my case, my portrayal of Jack and/or Johnny Depp adds to the ambience of an event along with giving photo opportunities where, everyone knows full well that they have a better chance of winning a lottery than meeting the real icon.  Some of the best female impersonators are men and very much highly regarded.  I cannot see why, as a woman, my impersonating a male icon should be any different.

I truly believe I have not insulted Mr. Depp personally by venturing out and characterizing my portrayal of him.  Let us look back at some of Johnny Depp’s films where he himself has cross-dressed as a woman on 3 separate occasions and has brilliantly executed the female gender in ‘Ed Wood’ and ‘Before Night Falls’, (including ‘21 Jump Street’)….

johnny-depp-as-bon-bon-in-before-night-falls

Johnny Depp as Bon Bon in “Before Night Falls”   Johnny Depp in “Ed Wood”

New York:  “Hollywood star Johnny Depp may be as straight as an arrow, and have played the role of a coarse pirate in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies to the hilt, but the actor was equally at ease wearing women’s clothes during the filming of ‘Ed Wood’, in which he played the real-life cross-dressing movie director.”

johnny-depp-in-ed-wood

Johnny Depp in “Ed Wood”

Another editor reported:

“Our heartthrob Johnny Depp has always taken us by storm. But a latest revelation that he loves to dress up in women’s lingerie has left us… amused”.

A new book ‘The Secret World of Johnny Depp’ authored by celebrity writer Nigel Goodall says that the actor likes to dress as a woman so much that while shooting for the drama ‘Ed Wood’ he used to wear female undergarments and kept on wearing them even when the camera was off leaving everyone at the shoot surprised including the director”.

Johnny Depp has a future project in mind and that is to portray Carol Channing’s biopic.  The Mirror quoted Johnny Depp saying that playing Carol Channing would be his “dream role”.

Johnny Depp’s eccentric nature has made him one of the most diverse actor’s of today.  He will take on roles that other’s may not relish and he continues to entertain audiences all over the world who embrace his talents.  I am grateful to have been given an opportunity to enjoy personifying a great artist ‘as’ an artist,.. because transforming myself from a woman to a man, to me, is classified as art.  The beauty is, that in my case, when I ‘strip the canvas’, underneath it all I am still my own individual.

female-comparison-johnny-depp-in-before-night-fallsblond-female-comparison-johnny-depp-in-ed-woodHere are 2 sets of comparison photos.  B & W photo on the left,  Johnny has a 5 o’clock shadow still eminent.
