Mayan Hot Chocolate Recipe

Mayan Hot Chocolate Recipe

For those who have seen the romantic movie “CHOCOLAT” with French actress Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp…. have you ever wondered what Vianne’s (Julliette Binoche) Mayan chocolate recipes, (esp. her hot chocolate) actually tastes like? Having viewed the film several times, it astounds me how the director got each actor/tress to enact the tasting of Vianne’s chocolate “Birthday feast” for Armande Voizin (Judy Dench), with such sensual precision. Or was the chocolate sauce really that sensual and that good? It enhanced our family’s curiosity as an audience, hence the pursuit for the recipe. Once found,chocolat-207684 my husband put together the ingredients for the Mayan hot chocolate, (which calls for chili peppers). May I conclude, that along with candlelight and an after dinner glass of red wine, this makes for an extremely romantic and decadent dessert. The sensual reactions of the actor/tress in this movie is not an exaggeration.

Here is the recipe, …. enjoy:

Ingredients:

1 fresh chili pepper, cut in half, seeds removed

2 cups water

5 cups milk or half-and-half

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

1 to 2 cinnamon sticks

8 ounces bittersweet chocolate or 3 Mexican chocolate, cut into 1/4 in. pieces

2 tablespoons sugar or honey or to taste

1 tablespoon almonds or hazelnuts, finely ground

Preparation:

Add chili pepper and water to small saucepan; heat to boil. Cook until liquid is reduced to 1 cup, about 15 minutes. Strain out chili pepper and any stray seeds. Set liquid aside.

Combine milk, vanilla bean and cinnamon stick in medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until bubbles appear around edge of pan. Reduce heat to low. Add chocolate and sugar; whisk occasionally until chocolate is melted and sugar dissolved, about 5 minutes.

Turn off heat; remove vanilla bean and cinnamon stick. Stir in ground almonds. Add chili pepper liquid a little at a time until desired flavour and heat is reached. If chocolate is too thick, thin with a little more milk.

A Heartwarming Event

A 4 year old girl, as a true pirate, stole my heart….

I attended the most incredible Halloween event/gig that truly touched my heart.  This family gave up half their house/home (and entire backyard) to a ‘pirate’ make-over creating a safe Halloween environment for young children.  There were 6 different stations including hidden passages and tunnels, each provided with an actor.  A Hundred people attended, 50 of whom were kids ages 4 – 8.  Separated into 6 groups, (each group baring the name of a famous Pirate ship), the kids would proceed in their individual groups to each station.  The reception of my presence as Jack from both parents and kids, was phenomenal….. but one little 4 year old girl stole my heart.  When the event came to a close, the little girl didn’t want me to make my departure. She placed her small little hand in mine and led the way back through all the stations ending up in ‘Pirates Lair’ where I was originally appointed.  There we played some games.  Once her father came to ‘claim’ her to leave ‘port’, she was handed a ‘Pirate Apprenticeship Completion Certificate’ by the host. Since she was too young to read handwriting,  I pointed out that Captain Jack had signed the bottom her Certificate.  She looked up at me with a warm and gentle smile and with both little hands, grabbing one of mine, proceded to manipulate my baby finger into a shape of a hook and engaged her baby finger, (also shaped as a hook), into mine.  She looked me straight in the face, again with her gentle smile, and said, “friends forever”.

I almost broke character and become a “slobbering” mother.

Along side Kim Johannsen, (Pirate name: Captain Kidd) creator of the “Privateers” and organizer of all volunteer fundraising events, I was honoured with an invite as Captain Jack to deliver the “Privateers’ ” very first cheque of $5,000.00 to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. MTV MUSIC AWARDS, June 3, 2012

A little inspiration from the MTV Music Awards, June 3, 2012

My latest photo shoot as Johnny Depp Look-alike/Impersonator was inspired by the MTV Awards aired on June 3, 2012. The popular actor revealed his amazing talents on the guitar when he took to the stage to perform with The Black Keys. Johnny Depp was also presented the MTV Generation Award by Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, for his on screen presence to “rise above and go beyond” the generations and for his exceptional contributions.

Altering the look to suit my needs and relying on product availability, I created the essence of that well deserved award event.  (Other photos available in my Johnny Gallery).

A Little “curve” to the Wardrobe

Throwing in a Personal Touch

My “Johnny” wardrobe has been inspired and based on ensembles Mr. Depp has worn in photos to various public funtions and soirees.  I try to match certain looks as closely as I can, favoring his loose fitted layered look.  His colour palette mostly consists and harbours along the lines of ‘earthtones’, blacks, tans, browns and dark blues. On a whim, during a recent photo shoot, I decided to throw on a pink stripped shirt, layered with JDepp’s usual blacks and blues, sporting his daring blue nail polish, showing off an array of necklaces along with one of his signature neck scarves and blue aviators…. and his latest edition…. Native American style beads on his fedora, (Note: Beads are not a replica).

bc-childrens-hospital-foundation-logo

I am honoured to be welcomed on board by a fine crew of pirates who are members of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Four families from this group had children with possible life threatening illnesses who were admitted to the Children’s Hospital.

They are all alive and well and in appreciation, members of the families and friends donate their time, efforts and ‘plunder’ to the foundation.  I am happy to oblige my time as Captain Jack or as a female pirate, (as in photo below) to partake in any or all of the upcoming events.

A Funny Cell Phone Text

A Funny Cell Phone Text

I had the best laugh in a long time

I sent my daughter, (who shoots all my ‘non’ event profile photos of me as Johnny Depp), a text the other day that went as follows:

Denise Pearson: ‘I newd new JD photos taken. But I’m only doing one outfit this time.’

Victoria Pearson: ‘Um you “newd” new JD photos? Is that code for you want nude JD photos?’

(Just had to share)
